Thanks for hanging out and welcoming the new year with us, your intrepid PHX Comedy Podcasteers!
Today’s podcast is a great little chat with Gary Hood, more affectionately known as Hoodie, of Laff’s Comedy Caffe in Tucson! Hoodie’s widely known among Arizona and national comics as a big snugglebug, a tough cookie, a grumpy old man, and a genuinely caring father figure, all in the same package. If you’ve been to Laff’s in the past decade or so, you’ve probably encountered Hoodie, whether you know it or not.
As comics, we know Hoodie quite well, from being trapped in a tiny sound room with him as he regales us with stories of comedy past that we can only half listen to because we’re trying to pay attention to the comic on stage so we know when to run out and say, “give it up for so and so! Wasn’t he/she fantastic?!” But it was precisely those half-heard stories that made us so desperately want to get Hoodie on the podcast. He’s a big chocolatey chunk of PHX Comedy, even from all the way down in Tucson. Don’t question our geography. Just don’t.
By the way, did we mention that this is a two-parter? Yeah, we’re keeping up with that theme. It’s easy when you’ve got great conversations with people that have spent so many decades pursuing comedy in some of its highest and lowest moments. Enjoy this first half of the podcast with Hoodie, talking about his origins before comedy, the moments and experiences that would eventually prepare him for the stage. Next week, we’ll talk about winding up in Tucson. Get it. It’s fun.
This week at Hidden House, we’re proud to be a part of a great PHX Comedy tradition, the All-New Material show! A ton of comics, all doing never before seen, never before heard, brand new material on stage, all night long! Some jokes will flop miserably! Some jokes will soar and become the new closer! You’ve got to come out to Hidden House at 9pm for this always free show to find out which is which!
This Thursday at Monkey Pants, we decided to copy that great PHX Comedy tradition and put it in Pants! See above paragraph for details, just change out “Hidden House” and “9pm” with “Monkey Pants” and “8.30pm” and you’ve got it.
